Kimberly Stokes is a Gold-Coast based artist who examines the effects of digital culture on perceptions of self. Her art addresses how conventional engagement with social networking sites facilitates a continuous fragmentation, adaptation and dissemination of identity. Employing a conceptual approach to art making, Stokes works in an array of mediums, including still and moving images, installation and performance. Through her practice, she confronts the prevailing collapse of the borders between virtual and physical realities, and explores the potential impacts this can have on an individualʼs sense of self.
In 2019, Stokes graduated with Honours from a Bachelor of Fine Arts: Visual Arts, at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Her work has been exhibited in multiple local exhibitions, including Hey Neighbour at Wreckers Artspace (2020), EPOCH: QUT Visual Arts Graduate Exhibition (2019) at QUT, Uncertain Futures (2019) at Metro Arts, and a public commission by the Brisbane City Council for Botanica 2019 (2019).
As of 2020, Stokes Co-founded and is a current Co-director at NEXTDOOR Artist Run Initiative; a not-for-profit organisation that exists to champion the experimental practices of early career contemporary artists, based in Brisbane. For the months of June-August, she is engaging in the three-month LOCAL AIR residency at THE WALLS ARTSPACE, in Miami.
